Today, Saturday, health officials in Switzerland announced the first case of monkeypox for a person living in the canton of Bern, noting that he contracted the disease outside the country.
The Health Authority in Bern said that the patient underwent treatment and is now subject to isolation at home, according to “AFP”.
And the health authority stated in a statement that everyone who had contact with the patient was informed, adding: “To the best of our knowledge, the person in question was exposed to the virus abroad.”
Switzerland thus joins several Western countries, including Britain, Germany, Spain, Sweden and the United States in reporting cases, raising fears of the virus’ spread.
Yesterday, Friday, the World Health Organization published an introductory guide about the monkeypox virus, after recording about 80 suspected cases so far in Europe, America and Australia.
The virus first appeared among humans in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, when a 9-year-old child contracted it, in an area from which smallpox disappeared in 1968.
Monkeypox is mainly found in tropical rainforest regions of central and western Africa, but the disease has appeared in other parts of the world in recent days. Its symptoms include fever, rash, and swollen lymph nodes.
Other experts considered that the spread of this epidemic in Europe may indicate new mutations that are able to spread outside rainy tropical environments.

Hunger enables us to make good decisions

Researchers have reported that thinking while the stomach is empty gives us the opportunity to make more informed decisions, according to a study conducted by the Dutch University of Utrecht.
The Italian magazine “Focus” quoted scientists as saying that hunger causes a state of alertness and focus for humans, and immediately directs us towards wiser choices, and avoids falling into the maze of thoughts.
The researchers involved 81 university students in their study, where they asked all students to fast from the night before the experiment, and the next morning, some food, especially very fat yogurt, was served to some students, to achieve a feeling of satiety, while other students were not served food.
The students had to take a psychological betting test, a test used to study the dynamics of decision-making processes, and they were asked to take a questionnaire, to test the ability to delay getting small immediate rewards in exchange for larger rewards after a period of time. The student was asked a question such as: Would you rather get 27 euros today, or 50 euros in three weeks?”
In the first test, hungry students were shown to be more likely to make better choices faster than their peers, and in the second test they were also shown to know how to make the best decision to achieve big, long-term rewards.
The researchers conclude that in certain situations, hunger can naturally push us to make better decisions faster, whereby when our stomachs are full, we are lost in the maze of thinking.
It is noteworthy that this rule has exceptions, as hunger can make the task of thinking more difficult, for example when you start to stick to a diet.

America approves the first drug to treat hair loss caused by “alopecia”

For the first time, America has provided a treatment option for people who suffer from a rare autoimmune disorder that causes their hair to fall out suddenly.
Last Monday, the US Food and Drug Administration approved Baricitinib, a once-daily pill developed by Eli Lilly, to treat alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease that causes sudden hair loss.
Baricitinib helps regrow hair by preventing the body’s immune system from attacking the hair follicles.
Two Phase III clinical trials involving a total of 1,200 patients with severe alopecia areata found that about 40 percent of people who received a daily 4 milligram dose of the drug had their hair completely re-growth, or nearly after 36 weeks.
The drug was originally approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2018 to treat rheumatoid arthritis, according to NBC.
Baricitinib is part of a class of drugs known as JAK inhibitors and is the first approved treatment in America for alopecia areata, which affects more than 300,000 people in the country each year, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
People with an autoimmune disease can experience hair loss anywhere on their body, including around the scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, and the condition can develop at any age, although most people get infected. It occurs during childhood or during the teenage years.
